Yahoo! Podcasts

A podcast basically consists of an MP3 file and a text file called an RSS feed. RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication,"

and the file tells Yahoo! Podcasts and other podcatchers, like iTunes, how to find and get your podcast. An RSS feed also lets people subscribe to your podcast and automatically get updates of your new content.

What can you podcast? A podcast can be anything that you have a keen interest on and something that you have reason to believe people would be interested to listen to. Samples of podcasts are your commentaries about a film, current events, celebrities, etc. If you are an aspiring singer, it can be a recording of your music. You can also discuss food tips, your choices for the best restaurants in your area. The possibilities are limited only by your interest and imagination.

Basics of Podcasting

Once you have decided on the topic of your podcast, how long and how frequent your podcast will be, you must now prepare your podcasting gear. Do not be intimidated. There is nothing extraordinary about this. You most probably have these things with you already.

A laptop or a desktop computer with an Internet connection

Yahoo! recommends that your computer run the recent version of Windows (Windows 2000 or newer), Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3 or newer), or Linux (RedHat Linux 6.0 or newer)

A microphone

Most new computer models come with a built-in microphone. If the quality is good enough, this would do. For better sound quality, however, you may want to consider buying an external microphone that you can plug into your computer.

Sound recording software

Check the Net for choices on free and paid software programs to record your podcast. A free software you can use for both Mac and PC is Audacity.

An MP3 encoder

This is the software that converts your podcast into an MP3 file. You can use the LAME MP3 Encoder. You can also use iTunes to convert your recordings to MP3.

Next, record your podcast and save it as an MP3 file.

When your podcast is finished, you need to put it online. If you already have access to a web hosting service, just FTP your podcast there.

The most important part is to share and advertise your podcast. You can do this by Listing your RSS feed on podcast directories such as Yahoo! Podcasts, Odeo, iTunes, and Podcast Alley.

You can also put a Yahoo Podcast badge on your site by simply cutting and pasting a Yahoo! html code.
