The Enduring Appeal of Banners

During the 90s, banner advertising was the predominant mode to advertise on the Net. However, some marketers are now questioning the effectiveness of banners as an advertising tool.  Banner click-thru is believed to be hovering around .5%. Meaning, out of 1,000 viewers, only 5 will click on it.

In any case, banners will still be around for some time so it is still helpful to take a closer look at it.

Three  ways to use Banners

There are basically 3 ways by which you can use banners to advertise your site:

1.  Purchase banner space in another site.

This is just like purchasing a space in a newspaper or magazine. Banners are charged on a pay-per-impression basis. The rates vary from website to website. Banner exchange programs also banner ad spaces. To give you an idea, 1800banners rates are at $2.95 per 10,000 banner impressions.

 2.  Participate in banner exchange programs

A banner exchange program works like this. You signup for a program. Once approved, your banner will be displayed in other member sites in exchange for other member sites' displaying their banners on your site. There is normally a 2:1 banner exchange ratio: This means that for every 2 banner ads you show on your site, your banner ad gets shown once on another site.

Although this may sound like a fair exhange, there are other factors that you need to consider.  Remember that when a visitor clicks on your site, he might leave your site for good. Also, you have no control as to the quality of banner ads that will appear on your site.  Banner exchange programs are free so it doesn't really hurt to try.

2.  Use your own banners for your affiliate programs

If you are planning to have an affiliate program, you need to make your own banners for your your affiliates to use. There are different software available for creating banners. Some are free, some are shareware.  Simply type in "banner design software" to see the alternatives.
