How people make money from eBay

The beauty of selling on eBay is that you do not need to have an existing business. You do not even need a website. All you need are products to sell.

Most people start with selling products that they already own such as vintage clothes, home accesories, dolls, baseball cards, watches, etc.  If you can sell them in a garage sale, you can sell them on eBay.

Those who have experienced selling on eBay graduate to selling items that they buy from wholesalers and selling them at a profit.  Because of the global nature of eBay, what may cost a few dollars in your town may cost a few hundreds in other places.

Brandon Dupsky makes $22,000 a day from selling everyday products on e Bay.

How to get started on eBay

The first thing you need to do is to explore the site. The eBay site is huge but easy to navigate. If you are serious about selling on eBay, spend a few hours perusing the site. Read the categories, lurk at the desicussion boards and take the guided tour.  Familiarize yourself with the site.

If you just want to explore the site, there is no need to register. But once you've decided to buy or sell, you need to register. Registration is free.

When you register, you need a unique user ID which will identify you in eBay. When choosing a name, choose one that reflects the business that you are in. At the same time, ensure that your name is flexible enough to accomodate other products that you may decide to sell in the future.

Here are the eBay rules in choosing your user ID:

Must be at least two characters long.

Can't contain spaces.

Can't be obscene, profane, or violate eBay's guidelines.

Can't be an email address or Web address.

Can't be the same as another sellers' eBay Store name.

Things you can't include:

The @, &, ', <, or > symbols.

URLs (example: xyz.com).

Consecutive underscores "__"

An underscore "_", dash "-", or period "." at the beginning of a User ID.

Spaces or tabs.

The word "eBay" (only eBay employees may use "eBay" in their User IDs).

The letter "e" followed by numbers.

Note: If you received the message: "User ID Invalid," you may have included a character that is not allowed in a User ID, such as !, #, $, %, and &.

When you register on eBay as a seller, you need to provide eBay with a credit card or credit card number. If you intend to sell just a few items, you may use your personal credit card. However, if you intend to make selling on eBay a career, you would be better using a credit card meant just for your eBay business.

If you haven't bought anything on eBay, I suggest that you experience the buying process first before attempting to sell. This way, you have an "insider" view on what it's like to bid for an item.

Choose your category.  There are over 45,000 categories in eBay.  Spend time going through the categories and determine which one suits your product the most.  eBay has a category selector to aid you in finding the most appropriate keywords.

Create your listings.  Listing your products is not free. When you list an item on eBay, you're charged an Insertion Fee. If the item sells, you are also charged a Final Value Fee. The total cost of selling an item is the Insertion Fee plus the Final Value Fee.  The minium insertion fee is $0.20 and the maximum $4.80.  The final value fee is 5.25% of the closing value. For items whose closing price is equal to or over $1,000, the final value fee is 5.25% of the initial $25.00 ($1.31), plus 3.25% of the initial $25.01 - $1,000.00 ($31.69), plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance ($1000.01 - closing value)

If the item is not sold, there is no fee.

Now, it is time to list your item.  With so many items competing for attention, you need to craft your listing carefully so that you entice the buyer to buy from you.

Here's what you need to come up with an effective listing:

1. A clear, accurate title with good keywords. You are limited to 45 words in your title so you use these words effectively. Use powerful words such as unique, collector's ite, rare, classic, no reserve, new, mint. Of course, use only when they are applicable.

2. Describe your items with enthisiasm but with complete honesty. If there are defect, make sure to mention it.  You can also think of other ways to get the buyers to prefer you. How about a money-back guarantee, free shipping, or some bonus products?

Make sure you have a photo to accompany the product you are selling. People are very visual and they would feel more comfortable bidding for a product with a photo.
